Partnering Basics by Lisa Nunziella-Hockley

As part of our new on-going series by Guest Editors we present you Partner Dance Basics with Lisa Nunziella.

[Editor: Many of you are already familiar with these points, but it's always good to refresh the basic tenets of good technique.]

  1. Posture: The better your posture, the more confidence you will exude. Pull your shoulders back and down, abs are tight, neck long, lift the chest.
  2. Work from your center. This is where your balance, strength and most movements initiate from.
  3. Be an independent dancer. Even though you are dancing with someone does not mean that you rely on them to keep your balance for you. Get grounded and feel the floor as you stand tall and strong.
  4. Enjoy every step you take. If you do, that comes through in your movement and your face.
  5. Find your inner beauty. We are all unique. It is wonderful to be inspired by someone that you feel is a beautiful dancer. But find your own style and let it out. Be the best YOU you can be!
  6. Gentlemen: Be strong and definite when you lead. If you make your partner look good, you look good!
  7. Ladies: Connect with your partner with a strong frame. Look him in the eyes and let him know that you are ready and confident.
  8. Breathe!!!! Breathe!!! Breathe!!!
  9. A partnership is 50/50, whether it is social or competitive.
  10. Enjoy the moment, feel the floor, stand tall and let the passion of the dance come through!
