Ron Cantwell


Ron was a very fortunate person to experience the dance craze of the Hustle back in the 70’s. He received his Hustle training from his East Coast friends as they traveled up and down the West Coast from Vancouver to Tijuana, overseas in the Far East and as far down south as Australia. “I remember” he recalls, “we were just a bunch of rag tag youth enjoying life as Sailors in the Navy all the while becoming wise in our youth experiencing different cultures and enjoying life dancing the nights away in Discothèques at each port we visited.”

Fast forward: After marriage, military, college, career and raising 3 children he is back and since 2004 has been instrumental in reviving The Hustle in Southern California. As a founding board member of the Hustle San Diego Dance club; www.hustlesd.org, he has enjoyed each opportunity to DJ whether in Los Angeles or San Diego, delights in getting his crowd going as he plays his brand of Hustle Music.

When asked what he is trying to accomplish, he state’s that he is trying to make it a Fun experience and in doing so he hopes to bring the passion back to the dance as it was back in the 70’s.

He is an avid dancer who enjoys Freestyle, Salsa, and Ballroom and is currently taking West Coast Swing classes to round out his repertoire. Of course his first love is and always will be Hustle.

His specialty is 30min to 1hour mixes as he entertains his audience and has truly become a Digital Mix Master using the most current technology via DJ software and laptop set-ups. He has an extensive library of 70’s thru today’s contemporary tracks as well as an extensive library of Ballroom and Latin music.

DJ Ron’s Mission Statement: To invigorate the Hustle with new contemporary music and to bring the passion of the dance back to life. Success will be achieved when we see more dancers in their 20’s attend events.

Ron resides in North San Diego County with his lovely wife of 30 years.

  • Feeling the dance…Dancing with the feet is one thing, but dancing with the heart is another.
  • Without Music dance has no feeling and without dance music has no meaning.
