Please keep all our friends and dance buddies from Iowa and Mississippi in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with the deadly floods.

Happy birthday wishes to Karen Lupo, Mark Rappa, Jimmie Billups, Billy Marti, John Festa, Carol Feldman and Louise Symington.

Twenty-one years ago, the premier dancer of the 20th century passed away. Fred Astaire did it all. Pick up one of his classic DVDs and experience him in action for yourself. A true triple threat.

Congratulations to Renne & Dominick Ali, they took the plunge. To view photos from their wedding see here.

Time Capsule
30 years ago, our country had a different landscape. The population was 80 million less then it is today. A peanut farmer by the name of Jimmy Carter was in the White house and the Dallas Cowboys won the Superbowl. Somehow, New York is always on peoples minds as the disco era was front page news. The NY Yankees would go on to win the baseball World Series and in the world series of dance, Tony and Susan Marolda would capture first place honors at the Harvest Moon Ball in the All Around and Hustle divisions. We would lose a gifted artist Norman Rockwell who looked at America and painted his expressions like no buddy else could. Tragedy struck when Pope Paul VI died, then unexpectedly the new Pope, John Paul I, would pass only 34 days in office. It was a year of ups and down. The movie box office rang big with ” The Buddy Holly Story”, “Coming Home”, ” The Deer Hunter” “Halloween”, “Heaven Can Wait” , “Midnight Express” and “National Lampoon’s Animal House”. The country had the dance fever. The top dance album sales in June of 1978 in Los Angeles and San Diego were:

  1. Come Into My Heart USA-European Connection
  2. Voyage - Voyage
  3. Rio De Janeiro - Gary Criss
  4. If My Friends Could See Me Now - Linda Clifford
  5. Romeo & Juliet - Alec R Constindinos & the Symphonic Orchestra
  6. Gimme Some Lovin - Kongos
  7. Macho Man - Village People
  8. Let’s All Chant - Michael Zaeger Band
  9. West Side Story - Salsoul Orchestra
  10. Sloth - Lawin Rinder & Michael Lewis
  11. Dance With Me - Peter Brown
  12. Play With Me - Sandy Mercer
  13. Lets Get Together - Detroit Emeralds
  14. Gettin the Spirit - Roberta Kelly
  15. Risky Changes - Bionic Boogie

Letters to the Editor

(our goal is to post readers letters twice a month, unfortunately due to space limitations we cannot publish them all)

Hi there Ron:
I’m a fairly new reader and do enjoy your on line publication. I was wondering when does the ‘readers choice awards’ take place? How do readers vote and when?
Thank you
Karen
Response from Editor:
It is held on an annual basis each October. We include a ballot in DanceTalk for all readers to participate and vote for their favorites.

I would like to comment about this past weeks tv show so you think you can dance. I think it is a great show. I really enjoy watching it. this past week they had disco. One couple had to do a disco routine. As one of the people that has written into you has said - the disco thing is always cheesy, pretty much making fun of the dance and the era. I know that the dance is the hustle but the name disco is still added and gives the dance a bad name. As much as I love hustle, it was the worst part of the tv show on so you think you can dance.
Thanks,
Harris Sulken

Ron, I wanted to respond to Paul Jones letter about “Marketing Hustle”. To sum up, Paul makes two assertions common from the NY styled dance crowd lately: 1.) Use current music 2.) Get our dance out there where kids can see it. I respond - Using current music would change nothing, because tired, slow music of any generation will never get young people away from the faster more exciting Lindy, Salsa or the night clubs of today. West coasters use current music, but having a faster dance than hustle - have more musical choices and a larger following - but NOTHING like when hustle was done at club speeds in the late 70’s. Putting NY styled Hustle out where it can be seen has been tried folks. And when we have done it, it was fatal. Kids at the competitions see hustle and west coast together, and pick west coast every time. If you put NY styled Hustle on TV, or in the clubs, it would poison the well so kids seeing it would never give any other hustle style a chance. After you demonstrate how completely “out of touch” we really are to kids even one time - they’ll never give you another chance. Best bet - keep NY style a useful “secret”, so people doing faster hustle styles that DO have a shot with the young can be seen and actually succeed.

Hi Dancetalk,
I can’t believe the story on David Padillia. Just when you think you know someone, then, bang. Oh my God. I knew David had been dancing for a long time but I had no idea he was on the Dance Fever show. We watched that show religiously, every week. I gots to see that video. Great job to let everyone know about David and what he has done for the hustle dance.
Peace
Robert

Good morning Ron
Greetings from Charlotte, I enjoy your newsletter and wanted to throw out a question to your readers. I attended the Brunswick New Jersey Campus for Rutgers Univ. I graduated in 1984 and spent just about every spare minute going dancing at the clubs in Woodbridge, Brunswick, Elizabeth and Nutley, NJ. I even danced in a contest at a place called 3 Brothers and took first place. I got to know a lot of the hustle dancers back then and just every now I wonder how they are doing? So basically this is a shout out to Gail (pretty blonde) and an incredible dancer Butchie, (tall, black gentlemen). They really helped me make it thru school when I was basically home sick and blue. They were four years of the best times in my life. Should they contact you, or anyone knows their where abouts, please forward them my contact information.
Thank you so much Ron,
Mary from Charlotte

So is it Hustle or West Coast?

It’s almost humorous watching the evolution of hustle into what appears to be a “back seat only” merge with west Coast swing. I remember 10 years ago seeing Top West Coast Couples get out and do their routines to hot vintage disco hits like Anita Wards “Knock on Wood”. You see - hustle had become too slow to dance to any original hustle disco music, and so now it was cool to do west coast to vintage hustle songs.

Eric Novoa (A TOP notch west coast Pro) states on his own website Bio that we won the overall classic at hustle USA only a year after taking up the dance.
“Erik crossed over into Hustle in 2000 and immediately stole the show by winning 1st place in the Professional Classic Division at Hustle USA 2001, a feat which he repeated in 2002 year. He later became a finalist on ABC Family’s revival of Dance Fever, becoming the only Hustle act on the premier series which aired in July 2003.”
Numerous overall winners in Hustle divisions were from first timer hustle folks (though veteran west coast dancers). We even have West Coast teachers instructing hustle lessons at big events, right next to Billy and Arties classes! Guess that should surprise no one who sees nearly all the hustle events today are paired with larger west coast counterparts. I believe Barry Durand even had a hand in advising the organizers of Hustle USA, Oh - and Barry teaches Hustle too now. At this point, ANY competent west coast dancer can trounce their hustle counterparts – assuming equal dance experience.

So what ever happened to OUR dance? Why no vintage music, and no young people? Why all the new flowery moves (grapevines) and things we NEVER did in 1980 (at 128 BPM)?

We have sold our souls folks. And worst yet, our dances very founders are promoting this imposter version of the dance that will NEVER work on the very songs that 95% of the world identifies with hustle! In 2008 - no hustle team would try doing NY styled Hustle to Knock on wood. It’s simply too fast. If they did - the figures would all break down into a run, or be so abbreviated, that it would be unrecognizable. Heck – we ALL danced hustle to that back in the day.

I will be teaching a class on Fast hustle dancing (they way we USED to dance) and passing out some videos of all these very same people at the 1989 Springfield Hilton doing the VERY SAME dance I teach today (fast) - NOT what we call hustle now at under 115 BPM.

I hope you will come and check us out - it will be a trip back into time, and the very best bet to get young people BACK into your programs!

I’d like to say this publicly since David Flynn decided to invoke my name in his article and argument in Hustle:

I feel that David Flynn tries divide the Hustle community rather than bring it together.

The dance of Hustle has evolved since the 1970’s. It is much more refined and has settled on an average tempo which about 5-10% slower than the tempo that actually killed Hustle. At the time when Hustle died (early 1980’s) the tempos of Disco music had gotten well above 130bpm….sometimes as high as 140bpm.

Since the “old” days, Hustle has evolved thanks to people who were fierce back then who also had a background in dance. Even back in the day, those people were featured on television shows and in movies. Those torch-bearers were the people who continued to teach Hustle to people based upon how it was actually done - not some Arthur Murray handbook.

What was found was that Hustle has many beautiful movements that work best between 115 and 120 bmp. It’s like saying that your car runs best and gets better gas millage between 55 and 80 miles per hour.

Additionally, one of the main reasons that Hustle died is that the “yank-pull” version was hurting follower’s shoulders. Sure, it was fun for male-leaders but devastating for followers. So the evolved version of Hustle also returned with a lighter connection making it more “independently” dynamic. This perhaps also affected tempo.

So there you have it…from a dancer. I’m a 2 time national champion in Hustle, 3 time finalist in WCS, 20 years of Jazz, Tap, Modern and Ballet. There’s a reason why I did well in Hustle….it wasn’t my WCS (although it helped). It was my overall dance background and exposure to many great instructors (not David Flynn).

I’ll offer a challenge to David - perhaps he should choreograph a Hustle routine at 135bmp. This routine should contain NO LIFTS OR TRICKS, just pure floor hustle. Additionally all movements should be within the &1,2,3 rhythmic Hustle tempo except for elements which are traditionally varied (such as a followers double-outside turn, which is 5 beats or more).

I’m going to bet that David will not be able to maintain a real tempo (the ability to execute &1,2,3 in 3 beats of music EVERY TIME for AT LEAST 3 MINUTES). And if David really wants to make his point then he should be THE FOLLOWER of this routine (not the leader). If he practices what he preaches and considers himself an instructor, then I’m sure this will be an easy challenge which will give validity to his argument. I look forward to seeing it on YouTube.

If you want to know the secret to dancing Hustle faster - use good overall dance technique & move your frickin feet faster - stop believing in HACKS like David.

All the best,
Erik Novoa

I appreciate the response from Eric – who I have in no way besmirched by citing his enviable winning record. Rather I identified a trend in the dances migration to west coast styling making their practitioners OUR hustle champions. West Coasters will not go out and win Quick step national competitions after one year of training – agreed Eric?

Eric is a lovely dancer, but tragically not a trained analyst (which I do for a living). I am paid to think. It just so happens that I dance well. So suspect this is more a problem of actually understanding the problem and addressing it with good reasoning and planning than just a dance off between opponents – which his challenge suggested (Eric versus David).

But if Eric wants a face off between us, lets have at it!

I am a competitor as he knows well. We’ll both dance three minutes at 135 (heck – lets make it 30 minutes since this is a style change not just a short routine) - and there’s no valid reason to trash the lifts either Eric. I suggest we both use the same partner – and I’ll chose one of the people from YOUR dance photo files in CT. We’ll see if you can lift her - then for round two we’ll take an IQ test of your choice - average score over both events wins. You see folks, it’s the analysis we care about here – not Eric’s 3 minute liftless routine.

Most folks agree – that this is a problem requiring brains AND dance talent to solve.

Eric - Here’s the part never addressed in your letter.

Yes - Eric, the dance is prettier now - and as a result - no one under 40 is interested in it. So heck, lets make it even prettier - and maybe no one under 60 will do it! No young means no future – and west coast cross overs for one extra trophy have NO devotion to the dance.

Eric is a better dancer than most people out there today, but folks - if you want to solve our national problem (Hustle’s missing young), don’t go to people best known for west coast and not known for their analytical skills.

Find somebody who cares about whether the dance goes away - and has the capacity to analyze and understand what the core problem is.

I would gladly pay Eric $80 an hour for lessons in west coast swing (w/o lifts or turns). And I would recommend him to others.

He’s a damn good dancer, photographer and promoter. But as far as understanding what’s going wrong with the national hustle scene - just ask Eric yourself.

He’ll tell you - “Nothing at all”.

Now does anybody seriously believe that analysis?

Mr. Flynn, you’re an egomaniac.

Like Erik says, you DO try to divide the Hustle community. The only analysis we don’t believe is yours.

Don’t try to use someone’s blog or invoke someone’s name to incite interest then slyly promote your workshop.

Just put your video’s up so we can finally have a good laugh.

Ego maniac? Me?

Lets set the record straight - I did not attack Eric. I find his achievements and his dancing to be first rate.

My point was pretty simple I thought - there is now a trend of West Coast dancers who are newbie hustle practitioners out right winning over veteran hustle dancers nationally.

Eric is one of many, but few feel the need to crow about it on their own bio. So I quoted his Bio.

Still - Eric is a winner and I addressed him as such. But the problem started when he decided to take issue with my version of reality. Eric was born in 1973, making him 35 today - or 4 years old when disco started.

So why is he instructing us on the failures of the Pre Hustle USA disco styles he never even saw? Where is he getting his information?

I find his version of the 1980’s to be flawed, having been there in the clubs myself.
Eric has never even attempted to address or acknowledge the national problem of hustle’s missing youth. Rather, he prefers (as you do) to make this some sort of personal issue about me.

He even suggested a 3 minute contest (w/o lifts) that demonstrates the extent to which he missed the ENTIRE point.
We are missing young people from hustle - that’s the point.

And when they go out to night clubs to dance it isn’t for 3 minutes - it’s from 9 PM till last call at 1:30 AM. Additionally, Eric is a first rate lindy dancer and Pro instructor - who knows very well from the Gap Ad that young folks LOVE all the lifts and tricks - and if our goal is to get them - throwing lifts out is foolish.
I have yet to see any of you folks address any part of the real problem - rather, anonymous posts like yours (coward), attacks on me - and anything to take the focus off your resistance to change.

Folks - my dancing, or ability to deliver young people isn’t the issue. I could be dead tomorrow and you’d still have a problem with hustle. You folks pushing NY style broke it, and so you need to fix it - and quit trying to call me an ego maniac for defending myself from your attempts to obfuscate.

I shouldn’t even have to defend myself - I am not the one promoting a “dead end” for hustle to line my own pockets.

David
